The Boston Celtics are reportedly interested in signing former Providence College standout Devin Carter, according to the Stein Line contributor Jake Fischer. "The Boston Celtics have shown interest in signing Devin Carter," postedFischer on social media Friday (Sep. 11) afternoon, noting that the West Palm Beach, Florida native will first need to clear waivers after having been dealt to the Atlanta Hawks earlier this offseason, then cut.
Carter, a 24-year-old point guard who played his college ball at nearby Providence College of Rhode Island, was picked up with the 13th overall pick of the 2024 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, and put up 8.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and just under a steal in 18.4 minutes per game.
The former Friar
shot just 26.3 percent from beyond the arc, 71.3 percent from the free throw line, and 41.4 percent from the floor overall in that campaign, likely contributing to the decision of the Hawks to part ways with Carter.
But the former lottery pick is a dogged defender who fits the sort of profile valued by Boston in the past, so a low-cost gamble on a second-draft player makes sense for Boston. That is, should another team not swoop in to secure his services in the meantime.
At present, the Celtics have just $1.7 million in cap space under the luxury tax, which Boston musty end the season under in order to reset the repeater tax and make heavy spending for the 2027-28 season a realistic possibility. So if the Celtics were to pull the trigger on such a move, it is very likely that Boston would make another move down the line to cut salary given the two-years experience veteran minimum would set the Celtics back $2.1 million.
