A pair of Boston Celtics alumni had some words for the current players suiting up for their college alma mater of Duke last week. One of them a beloved current member and the other perhaps less so given his exit from the Celtics, we are of course referring to Jayson Tatum and Kyrie Irving. The duo were among a number of high-profile Blue Devil alumni scrimmaging with the current Duke squad.
Joined by the likes of Celtics assistant coach Amile Jefferson and current NBAers Paolo Banchero, Cooper Flagg, and Jared McCain among others, Irving an Tatum shared some wisdom to those rising Duke prospects afterward.
"We always say, 'Have fun,' but we got a target on our back, everywhere we go," said Irving (h/t Duke Wire's Mack Baltes). "So get used to
it. Get dialed in, I know you guys are. Sophomores, juniors, seniors, lead the freshmen. You guys keep up the good work."
"I enjoy coming back, getting to know all of y'all," said the St. Louis native. "Quite honestly, this is what this is all about. When I was here, guys like Jabari (Parker) came back."
"So, it's just our responsibility to pay it forward. It means a lot to this program and we care about you guys. As much as y'all enjoyed this, I know we did too. And we just want to see y'all be the best that y'all can be."
