When it comes to Boston Celtics player enhancement (or, if you prefer to eschew the team's term for it, development), it takes a village. Or that's how Celtics assistant Craig Luschenat framed what goes into Boston's impressive record in developing players internally in a recent interview. "There's a lot of people involved, but essentially what we do is in the summer, the head of each department will sit down in a room and ... look at our players from every different lens and talk about their strengths, their weaknesses, the areas that we think are the most attainable for them to improve at," he explained. "Once we leave that meeting, it's our job to execute that plan."
"And so (we) sit down with the player, (and) explain to them what we're thinking.
I'll sit down with the player as well and hear their perspective on themselves, and how they view their game," continued Luschenat. "And then once I gather all the information, we just try and execute a plan. It takes literally everybody in the organization. I think we get the credit, the coaches, but I think really the performance staff, the (physical therapists) the strength team, the kitchen staff, the equipment (team), every single department adds up to the players you see on the floor."
"I think each year is different, so I think it's our job to help our guys help us win a championship for that given year," he continued. "So whatever is going to help that player, help us win a championship this year, is what we're focused on."
"Now, with that being said, with the young guys like Hugo (González), Jordan (Walsh), Baylor (Scheierman), Ron (Harper Jr.), Chris (Cenac Jr.), Dillon (Mitchell), they have a lot more years in the league to go," said Luschenat. "And we don't want to ignore them, what they should be in five years."
"So it's always a balance between what's going to help us win tomorrow. And in five years from now, what's going to help us win then as well. So, I think really in the summer is when we try to attack the long-term. And then once we get in the season, it's more like day-to-day, what's going to help us win."
