A traumatic injury can be a breaking point or a source of motivation for athletes. Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum chose the latter option.
After rupturing his Achilles in May of 2025, Tatum was left reeling and had to undergo a lengthy recovery process. He finally made it back on the court in March of 2026 and is gearing up for a healthy start to the upcoming 2026-27 NBA season. This wasn't an easy journey for Tatum, and his latest signature shoe — the Jordan Brand Tatum 5 — reflects that with a reference to the scars left on his heel from surgery.

"On every Tatum 5, on the right side, there are five lines across the heel just to acknowledge the scar on my right heel," he explained at a Jordan event unveiling his new kicks, via Complex.
The Tatum 5 is unlike the rest of the six-time All-Star's line of Jordans. This version has a strap across the laces and was built to be different, as Tatum wanted his next shoe to capture how he's changed since his Achilles injury.
"What I've had to learn and also accept from that experience is, anytime you go through something traumatic, you're not the same you," he stated. "You just can't be the same person anymore. And that's not saying that you're any worse, you're just different...So, aligning that with the Tatum 5, it looks different than every other shoe (I've had)."

The 28-year-old has kept busy this summer, promoting Jordan brand across the world in places like New York City and Shanghai. Tatum isn't used to this much downtime, but his Celtics were granted an early offseason following a Game 7 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers in the first round of the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
Although this defeat to an Atlantic Division rival likely stings, it's allowed Tatum to have his longest summer in years. The extended break could work wonders for him when his tenth season in the NBA officially begins on Tuesday, October 20.
"I've even come to a point where I've learned to appreciate not necessarily what happened, but what it taught me from that journey and from that process," Tatum said of his once devastating injury.
