Joe Mazzulla has earned a stellar reputation since taking over as head coach of the Boston Celtics. However, that reputation is also defined by Mazzulla's approach to coaching, where he's proven to embrace thinking outside of the box and to hold his players accountable on and off the court.
The Celtics players have appeared to respond well to Mazzulla's coaching in recent years. Not only did he guide the franchise to a championship in 2024, but he's also been a key factor in multiple players taking developmental leaps and outperforming expectations. Therefore, it's understandable why new additions may be excited to work with and learn from Mazzulla.
At a September 15 introductory news conference, veteran point guard Mike Conley was asked about
his first impressions of working with Mazzulla since signing with the Celtics earlier this summer.
"I thought he was crazy before," Conley joked. "He's not crazy, no. My impressions have been everything that I expected. From hearing from some of the players who've played for him around the league. His ideas, he's not afraid to push the envelope a little bit, to try things, to try different schemes, different reactions for players, different ways of getting things across. It's refreshing for me. You're used to just having coaches be structured in a certain way...I get here, and I don't know what I'm doing. There's so much for me to learn, about the game, and the way he sees the game is a different lens."
Throughout his four years leading the Celtics, Mazzulla has tried to bring fresh ideas to the table every season.
He's embraced learning from other coaches in other sports and has even used the animal kingdom to help get his message across at times.
Clearly, Conley is looking forward to working under Mazzulla and experiencing a different type of learning from one of the NBA's best young coaches.
