Did Boston Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla accidentally spark an Artificial Intelligence revolution among NBA head coaches? After the Celtics coach let it slip during a fan call-in session on local sports radio that he uses AI (not, of course, the nickname of the Philadelphia 76ers star but the tech) in his coaching strategies, provoking an array of responses from fans of the team.
It seems that Sean Sweeney, head coach of the Orlando Magic since the start of this season, caught wind of that interview ahead of his team's road tilt with Boston on Sunday (Nov. 1) afternoon, weighing in on how he sees the tech having a role in the league. "I think Joe’s probably smarter than I am," said the Magic coach via Key West Conch reporter Jason Beede.
"I’m
at sea level and he’s at 30,000 feet," he continued. "No, I think, any data that you can find, any tools that you can use to measure and help you make better decisions, we definitely use."
"And so I think, just in general, organizationally, my experience so far with the Magic is that we’re at the forefront of anything that we do when it comes to analysis," said Sweeney.
"Looking at how teams are playing, how we’re playing, what we can do better. So, (we) try to use whatever we can."
