And while we have been told by Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens that the driving forces behind the radical move was not a concern over spending so much as a desire for what he has since termed 'optionality,' that does not mean everyone is taking him at his word.

To be sure, there was a financial aspect to the trade of Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, the Georgia native's supermax deal making it especially hard to field the sort of roster you need to win in the NBA of today. But the punitive measures imposed by the league's collective bargaining agreement (CBA) were at least as big of a factor.
