While there may be nothing new about the supposed beef between star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum and former teammate (and current Philadelphia 76ers forward) Jaylen Brown, it has taken a few new directions this week after Tatum posted his account of the trade that sent the Georgia native to the Sixers. To be fair, quite a lot of ink has already been spilt on that particular topic since it went down in early July, meaning the Duke alum bears some blame in what happened after that. And the 'what' we reference above is the 'cap' emoji used by Brown on a social media post for the documentary video put out by Tatum, implying there is more to the story that the St. Louis native did not share in his video.
Now, another layer of the onion appears
to have been peeled back, with former Boston big man and current broadcaster Brian Scalabrine sharing some new, potentially explosive details in a recent segmentfrom his SiriusXM "Starting Lineup" show: Brown had evidently, per Scalabrine, requested a trade. "My understanding of this thing," said the NBC Sports Boston broadcaster, "is that he demanded to be traded."
"Not into the media, but to the organization," continued the Celtics alum, questioning why Brown would even be mad in the first place given his awareness of what went down. "I don't understand; I think I think Jaylen Brown lives in his own reality."
"Because it wasn't being documented that he demanded to be traded, then I don't think that anybody thinks that. Now he could say that it was Tatum's fault – he could just make stuff up. But my understanding is Jaylen Brown went to the organization and had a list of demands. And it was like, 'You either do this or you trade me.'"
"And he was rooting to get traded to Milwaukee, including calling some other teammates about, 'Hey, man, what do you think of Milwaukee? We should go there. So my point of all this is, if you're actually doing that and you're going to say that Tatum is the one that's lying, like, your whole basis of this thing is a lie."
This is a markedly different version of the story Brown appears to be pushing with his cryptic comments and posts. Whether this blows up with new recriminations and details remains to be seen. But quite a few fans of the Celtics and Brown would like this saga to end. And quite a few other fans of other teams and players are enjoying the schadenfreude with gusto.
