Veteran point guard Mike Conley Jr. signed with the Boston Celtics because of their culture. But he also signed with the Celtics to play with the best player on the team, star forward Jayson Tatum. And Conley let it be known how his new teammate set the stage for the season ahead, the St. Louis native organizing some West Coast practices well ahead of the training camp practice he spoke to the media at on Tuesday (Sep. 30) morning.
Conley attended the workouts Tatum put together in Los Angeles, and the Celtics guard said that "he called everybody and said, 'Hey, let's go work out. Let's go meet. Let's spend about seven, eight days out there, go golf, go out to eat'."
"He's setting up all kinds of things off the court. He's bringing in huddles
after practices, and every workout we have, he has something to say calling guys out and just really taking ownership of other situations, so I think that's big."
Conley got acquainted with many of his new teammates there, and the veteran guard had plenty of praise for his fellow Celtics in part because of that early familiarity. "There's a lot more talent in here than I ever thought," he explained. "You can go down the list."
"Baylor (Scheierman) has impressed me a lot … Sam (Hauser), we talk about Payton (Pritchard). Ron (Harper Jr.) has looked really good in the summertime and early in training camp, and you've got a line of all our guys. It's a really cool collection of guys, and all have unique skill set and very high IQ basketball players and go out there trying to win."
