It seems that the Boston Celtics had been trying to trade away star forward Jaylen Brown longer than had been previously assumed according to new reporting from senior ESPN contributor Shams Charania. For fans of the Celtics, the trade of Brown seemed to come out of nowhere, materializing rapidly in the wake of the failed pursuit of former Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo after arguably the best campaign of the Georgia native's career.
But per Charania, Boston President of Basketball Operations Brad Stevens and company had been trying to deal Brown to the Golden State Warriors during the 2025-26 regular season.
"The Warriors could have got in the Jaylen Brown sweepstakes if they wanted to give up 4 first-round picks-ish, in that range,"
said the reporter viaBoston Dot Com's Conor Ryan. "They decided not to from my understanding."
"Those two teams, the Warriors and Celtics did talk about a Jaylen Brown trade around the trade deadline and it was around several first round draft picks, potential swaps, and seconds," added Charania. "The Warriors decided not to go down that route and so that’s on them. That’s the decision they made."
Brown, of course, would be dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George and draft assets, but this nugget shows that the Celtics front office had been working to move on from the Cal alum for at least months longer than previously known by general public.
