From the moment the Boston Celtics decided to trade Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, there were concerns about how good Joe Mazzulla's team would be this season. After all, Brad Stevens had just parted ways with a player who led the franchise to the second seed and, in the process, emerged in the MVP conversation.
Trading Brown was certainly a bold call. Yet, Stevens has been revamping the roster over the past 18 months, as he looks to cleanse the repeater tag and build a more versatile rotation around Jayson Tatum. Without Brown on the roster, Boston should, at least in theory, be more movement-based and have a shot profile that is more in line with Mazzulla's overall system.
The early signs have been encouraging. Boston has looked solid
during its two preseason wins so far, with isolation-heavy basketball nowhere in sight. Suddenly, it's not outside the realm of possibility that the Celtics could be a better team this season, if everyone can stay somewhat healthy.
In a recent video from The Score, the host shared their opinion that trading Brown has indeed made the Celtics roster better. Not because they added talent, but rather because they now have a roster built around Tatum and the skill set he brings to the table. The ball is moving more, players aren't spotting up as much, and the offense has looked to be faster, especially in terms of transition.
