The Minnesota Vikings made a somewhat shocking move at quarterback before Week 1. Just when we thought the craziness was over, Kevin O'Connell had one more announcement in the bag. That announcement was that Carson Wentz would be Kyler Murray's backup quarterback.
It turns out that somewhat controversial decision was the right one. Carson Wentz led a comeback win for Minnesota, and it seems to have proved O'Connell right in his decision.
Bleacher Report discussed takeaways from Week 1, and one of them centered on that decision made by O'Connell and how it relates to Wentz. They also agree it proved to be the right choice, writing, ". . .Before the end of the preseason, they moved McCarthy into the QB3 role and gave journeyman Carson Wentz the backup
job. Sunday's game showed exactly why they made Wentz the understudy. Murray was ruled out with a concussion early in the game, but the Vikings managed to get the win thanks to some timely defense and some sound game management by Wentz. He didn't have eye-popping numbers (12-of-19 for 133 yards), but Wentz tossed a trio of scores and led Minnesota to a fairly comfortable victory."
Wentz now comes into Week 2 potentially being the starter if Murray is not good to go. It would be a division game against the Bears, so it would be another tough matchup, but Wentz and the Vikings' defense seem ready for anything after one week.
