The Minnesota Vikings made a bit of a shocking move at quarterback before Week 1. When we thought it was done with the craziness, Kevin O'Connell had one more announcement in the bag. That announcement was that Carson Wentz would be the backup quarterback to Kyler Murray.
It turns out that somewhat controversial decision was the right one. Carson Wentz led a comeback win for Minnesota and, in the process, created new doubts regarding J.J. McCarthy.
Bleacher Report discussed takeaways from Week 1, and one of them centered on the state of J.J. McCarthy on the Vikings. They wrote, "Until Murray clears the concussion protocol, McCarthy may now be one injury away from getting back on the field. That is, if the Vikings are comfortable making him QB2
behind Wentz. Minnesota initially kept four quarterbacks on its active roster before cutting Max Brosmer and signing him to the practice squad. Will the Vikings consider knocking McCarthy down the depth chart again, or will they fully embrace him as the backup? Given McCarthy's status as a former first-round pick with a tenuous NFL future, it's a question that head coach Kevin O'Connell is likely to face this week."
It is an interesting question, though: if Murray misses Week 2, where does McCarthy end up? If he becomes the QB3 again, then it will create more of a controversy in terms of him clearly being done as a member of the Vikings.
