With the regular season now in full swing, analysts around the league are starting to reflect on the games from the previous. First up, an eventful Week 1 that saw near-record scoring totals is being dissected regarding the quarterback play.
There were a ton of notable performances in Week 1, including one from Vikings quarterback Carson Wentz. He joined Drew Lock of the Seahawks as a backup who came in due to injury and led his team to victory. With that in mind, it is no surprise that Bleacher Report gave him an A grade in their breakdown.
Bleacher Report's Brent Sobleski wrote about the grade, saying, "The Vikings were ready to hand the franchise keys to Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback. Unfortunately, Murray suffered a concussion
in the first quarter Sunday against the Green Bay Packers. With Murray out of the contest, veteran Carson Wentz took over the Vikings offense and helped lead the squad to a victory. Head coach Kevin O'Connell knew exactly what to expect of Wentz if he was placed in this exact situation, hence why he was named the team's backup QB."
Wentz rose to the occasion and helped facilitate a memorable comeback win in Week 1. Are we saying the same positive things if J.J. McCarthy had stepped in? Perhaps, but it speaks to the decision-making of O'Connell that he was able to see this as a possibility and made the right choice.
