What is the story about?

The Vikings quarterback battle did not even make it to the first preseason game. After weeks of build-up, OTAs, and training camp practices, we have now arrived at a decision on the starter by head coach Kevin O'Connell.

On Tuesday, the Minnesota Vikings named Kyler Murray as their starting quarterback for the start of the regular season. ESPN's Adam Schefter

was the first to report the news of the decision.

With Murray being named the starter, he will be the fourth starter for the team in as many years. Going back to 2023 they have gone through Kirk Cousins, Sam Darnold, and J.J. McCarthy before now arriving at Murray. The Vikings hope he will be able to replicate the play of Darnold that they enjoyed in 2024.

As for McCarthy, they will now have

some tough decisions to make regarding his place in the depth chart. The team still has veteran Carson Wentz, who played better than McCarthy in spots during the 2025 season, and Max Brosmer. Someone will be the odd man out; could it be the former top pick for Minnesota?

All of that will be decided in time, but for now, it is full-steam ahead with Murray.
