The Minnesota Vikings may have only one loss, but the urgency has increased after last Sunday's defeat to the Detroit Lions. After generating only 266 yards of offense, the Vikings have legitimate concerns about how sustainable their defense-first approach can be.
Things won't get easier when they host the Buffalo Bills next Monday night, pitting the two teams together in a crucial Week 9 matchup. Minnesota, 6-1, is now narrowly ahead of the Chicago Bears (6-2) and Detroit Lions (5-2) in the NFC North. Even the Green Bay Packers (5-3) are lurking.
A loss to the Bills doesn't guarantee future success or doom, but it could keep questions alive for a Vikings team that feels at a crossroads. Justin Jefferson didn't speak to the media following Sunday's
loss to the Lions. Speculation continues to swirl regarding a possible addition at quarterback. Any momentum on a possible trade for Jonathan Taylor seemed to grind to a halt Wednesday morning.
Minnesota still has one of the league's best defenses, but Buffalo is scoring more points per game than anyone else. The Vikings' defense may allow a few big plays on Monday, so the offense will have to do its part to stay in the game. Uncertainty remains about whether Kyler Murray can play after Kevin O'Connell told the media on Monday that the quarterback has a sore hamstring.
Here are three key matchups to watch on Monday night.
Key matchups to watch between the Vikings and Bills in Week 9
Justin Jefferson vs. Christian Benford
It's been a tough season and a half for Jefferson. He has only three 100-yard games since the start of the 2025 season and is coming off a five-catch, 33-yard performance last week in Detroit. Will Kevin O'Connell do all he can to ensure Jefferson not only gets targeted on Monday, but also receives quality opportunities?
Expect Jefferson to line up against Bills CB Christian Benford for much of the game. The fifth-year cornerback has allowed 23 receptions for 234 yards and three touchdowns on 42 targets, per Next Gen Stats. Is this the game where Jefferson can finally get back to his historical pace from his first five seasons?
Christian Darrisaw/Brian O'Neill vs. Greg Rousseau
The Vikings' tackles will have their hands full in this one when Bills edge rusher Greg Rousseau lines up across from them. Buffalo's pass-rusher is the only player on the team to exceed 20 pressures (37), generating seven sacks, which is tied for third-most in the league.
PFF has credited Christian Darrisaw with five sacks allowed, though it has attributed only seven pressures to him. Brian O'Neill has allowed one sack and six pressures. Per Next Gen Stats, Lions edge rusher Aiden Hutchinson had only one pressure last week. Minnesota will need a similar performance from its tackle duo on Monday.
Dallas Turner vs. Dion Dawkins
I'm choosing the other side of the line for my final matchup here. The Vikings' best shot at beating the Bills is to pressure Josh Allen. Dallas Turner had only one pressure last week against Lions LT Penei Sewell, and it won't get much easier this week.
Buffalo LT Dion Dawkins is one of the league's best, ranking sixth out of 69 tackles with an 80.3 PFF grade this season. PFF has attributed 19 pressures to him this year, though Allen's scrambling ability may have contributed to those numbers.
Per Next Gen Stats, Turner is still tied for second in the NFL with 40 pressures. He will need to elevate his game to help disrupt Allen. If he can, the rest of the defense has a chance to slow down the Bills' high-octane offense.
