The Vikings and their quarterback position are doomed to be on a rinse-and-repeat cycle till the end of time, it seems. In recent years, the position has seen a lot of turnover, with a new starter in each of the last four seasons. One of those starters finds himself on his third team in that stretch of time (Kirk Cousins), another has won a Super Bowl (Sam Darnold), and another is now the QB3 on this team (J.J. McCarthy).
We set the table for that as the discussion continues around the position, as their Week 1 starter this season, Kyler Murray, is now dealing with a concussion, which has Carson Wentz flexed into the fold. But could they be in the market for more insurance?
Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox explored this possibility in a recent
piece discussing trade pieces around the NFL. Within it, he mentioned the Vikings could be in play for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones.
He explains the idea of Jones being traded, writing, "Jones proved last year that he can keep the 49ers afloat if Brock Purdy misses time. He went 5-3 as a starter while throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2025. The unknown is how long San Francisco will prioritize quarterback insurance over an intriguing return. Jones is practically guaranteed to depart in 2027 free agency. He could potentially net a big haul from a playoff hopeful in search of a starting quarterback. A conditional second-round pick that can become a first might be enough to get a deal done."
If they were to make such a trade, one would have to imagine that either Wentz or McCarthy would also be on the way out. This seems like a stretch given what we have seen from the team in Week 1 but anything is possible in the NFL today.
