Yesterday, the Minnesota Vikings parted ways with former 10th overall pick J.J. McCarthy. After months of rumors that McCarthy would be on the move, he was traded to the New York Giants for a 2027 fifth-round pick. This move has stirred up quite the reaction from the fan base, but according to the GM, this move could be setting them up for success this season.
While speaking to the media, General Manager Nolan Teasley spoke about the decision to move on from McCarthy and how the extra pick could help this season:
"The return made sense for us now to get an asset that, in all honesty, is going to help us in the future or it could help us this season." - GM Nolan Teasley
The only way a future draft pick could help this season is if the franchise
made a trade to help bolster the roster. Right now, the most likely move would be to trade for a running back. The only issue with that plan is that there are not a lot of running backs available via trade, and adding an extra fifth would not take it over the top. We will have to wait and see if Minnesota is active in the trade market as the deadline looms in a few weeks.
