The Vikings and their quarterback position are doomed to be on a rinse-and-repeat cycle till the end of time, it seems. In recent years, the position has seen a lot of turnover, with a new starter in each of the last four seasons. One of those starters finds himself on his third team in that stretch of time (Kirk Cousins), another has won a Super Bowl (Sam Darnold), and another is now the QB3 on this team (J.J. McCarthy).
We set the table for that as the discussion continues around the position, as their Week 1 starter this season, Kyler Murray, is now dealing with a concussion, which has Carson Wentz flexed into the fold.
ESPN's Dan Graziano recently wrote up his thoughts and takeaways on the Vikings quarterback situation. Specifically, he alluded
to the discussion around McCarthy and Wentz. He set the table for why the depth chart has been organized the way it was.
". . .This is more about the Vikings believing Wentz's veteran experience puts them in better position with limited preparation time when a QB gets hurt in-game (as happened Sunday) and/or there's uncertainty about who's going to start throughout the week. McCarthy was the emergency third QB on Sunday, so the team knew there was a chance they might have to play him. I could see a scenario in which Wentz starts this week with McCarthy as the backup, assuming Murray can't go."
McCarthy just seems to be the odd man out in this scenario, but any injury keeps him in the thick of it a bit longer than many expected. Wentz has shown he can be a solid backup behind Murray, or anyone, for that matter.
