The long-awaited news that Vikings fans had been hearing rumors of since the preseason dropped on Monday around lunchtime.
It came down from The Ringer's Tom Pelissero when he reported
that the team was trading away J.J. McCarthy. The Vikings were trading him to the New York Giants in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick, which shows that the value of the former top pick has fallen off over the years since being drafted.ESPN's Kevin Seifert added a wrinkle to the trade news. He shared some information from the Elias Sports Bureau. Seifert explained, "J.J. McCarthy is 1 of 4 first-round QBs in the past 25 years to start 10 or fewer games for the team that drafted them."
The other three quarterbacks are not the company someone hopes to make when
they are a top draft pick. They were:
- Paxton Lynch
- Trey Lance
- Johnny Manziel
Not the greatst company to have but as Trey Lance has shown he bounced back and has hung around the NFL. McCarthy may have a chance to start for the Giants this seaosn due to Jaxson Dart being out and Jameis Winston not playing as well as they had hoped. All is not lost for him but there examples pointing to it may be.
