The Minnesota Vikings' offensive struggles finally caught up with them in their Week 8 loss to the Detroit Lions. Five three-and-outs contributed to a 266-yard outing for the Vikings' offense, which faced a Lions defense that entered Sunday's game allowing more yards per game than anyone in the NFL.
When asked what went wrong for the offense, Kyler Murray said that execution, or lack thereof, contributed to the loss more than any schematic plan Detroit deployed.
"Penalties, too many misses, I don't know the statistics on us running the ball today, or me in the air, but just too much inconsistency," Murray told reporters after the game. "We didn't execute at a high enough level in a hostile environment on the road against a team that is a good
team.
"So, credit to them for the way they played today," Murray continued. "I thought we had our opportunities to get it done today, but we just didn't."
Murray completed 17-of-29 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns, although he threw a crucial interception near the end of the first half that led to a Lions field goal. Minnesota currently ranks 29th in yards per game, 27th in points scored, and 31st in passing yards.
Something will have to change as the Vikings prepare to play the Buffalo Bills next Monday night. If they don't, they could fall to 6-2.
