The Oklahoma Sooners knocked off the Texas Longhorns for the first time since 2023, and the second time in Brent Venables' tenure. Now, the Sooners hope to avoid a post-Texas letdown like the one they had in 2023.
That season Oklahoma improved to 6-0 with the win over Texas. The Sooners had the College Football Playoff and a final Big 12 championship in sight. However, they would narrowly beat the UCF Knights the next game, 31-29. They would then lose their next two games to the Kansas Jayhawks and the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the final Bedlam matchup for the foreseeable future. The Sooners rallied to go 10-2 in the regular season, but they didn't make the Big 12 title game or the CFP.
Quarterback John Mateer said the team is working to avoid
that letdown.
"It can obviously build momentum, but it can obviously get you trapped," Mateer said via Sooners Illustrated. "That's what we are focusing on. I heard that last time we beat Texas in 2023, people started celebrating and stuff. I don't know everything that went into that. But (Peyton Bowen) stepped up and made sure that wasn't going to happen."
Oklahoma now has a chance to show how much it has learned from that 2023 season. The win over Texas has given the Sooners a much-needed confidence boost, but carrying that energy forward will require the same focus and accountability that helped them pull off the upset. With the No. 15 Kentucky Wildcats next on the schedule, the challenge is to treat the rivalry win as a starting point rather than a reason to relax.
