Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer is coming off arguably his best performance in an Oklahoma uniform. The quarterback was excellent all game long against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, leading the Sooners to a 23-15 win.
Mateer completed 22-of-29 passes for 283 yards and two scores. He also added 37 yards on nine carries. Mateer made key plays with his arm and legs, including two third-down conversions late in the game to clinch the win. Most importantly, Mateer didn't put the ball in harm's way, which has been a big issue for Mateer this season.
Head coach Brent Venables raved about Mateer's performance on Saturday. Venables specifically highlighted the two touchdown drives right before half and to start the second half.
"Proud of John
and the way he played," Venables said. "I thought he played an excellent game. I thought he did some fantastic things. He made some great throws. I thought in the critical moments in the game, right there before half, on the 16 play, 90 some yard drive, and then to open up the second half as well, another 75-yard drive."
Mateer's performance against Mississippi State was an important step forward for an Oklahoma offense searching for consistency. The Sooners sustained drives, took advantage of opportunities and got production from Mateer both inside and outside the pocket. His ability to protect the football while delivering in high-pressure situations was particularly encouraging, especially after turnovers had hindered his progress earlier in the season.
The next challenge for Mateer will be making that level of execution a regular occurrence. Oklahoma has seen flashes of what its offense can become, but stringing together efficient performances will be key as the schedule continues. If Mateer can maintain his decision-making, limit mistakes, and keep creating plays with his arm and legs, the Sooners will have a stronger foundation to build on in the second half of the season.
