Former Oklahoma Sooners quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Baker Mayfield will be in Tampa for a few more years after agreeing to a three-year contract extension with the Buccaneers.
The extension will be worth $165 million and prevents Mayfield from hitting free agency next offseason. It's the second contract that Mayfield has signed with the Buccaneers. Mayfield was entering the final year of a three-year deal that was worth $100 million.
Mayfield was originally drafted by the Cleveland Browns as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. After several years in Cleveland and leading the Browns to their first playoff win in more than 20 years, the Browns traded Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers after an injury limited his effectiveness
in 2021.
Mayfield spent seven games with the Panthers before being released and landing with Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams, where he started four games and led Los Angeles on an improbable comeback victory.
In 2023, Mayfield signed with the Buccaneers as the heir to the retiring Tom Brady. Since winning the starting quarterback job in training camp that summer, Mayfield has started all 17 games in the last three seasons and has averaged 4,000 passing yards per season and 31.7 touchdowns.
He's been really good for the Bucs in his three seasons, earning a pair of Pro Bowl selections and helping Tampa Bay reach the playoffs in 2023 and 2024. Now he'll get to continue his career in the place that's become his adopted hometown at the NFL level.
