The Oklahoma Sooners made a major change to their offensive coaching staff on Monday when they removed Ben Arbuckle as offensive coordinator. He was replaced by tight ends coach Jason Witten. But that seems to be the only significant change the Sooners are making on offense.
Although there have been calls to try another quarterback given John Mateer's inconsistency and the Sooners' inability to move the football, it looks like Oklahoma will stick with Mateer for this week's road trip to Florida.
“I’m not talking about depth charts or anything like that,” Venables said on his coaches show Monday night. “I think our guys believe in John (Mateer). Some of the decisions we’ve made is because of that.”
CBS Sports' Matt Zenitz, who was the first to break
the Arbuckle firing, reported late Monday evening that Oklahoma is expected to stick with Mateer for this week. According to Zenitz's sources, Mateer received his normal percentage of first-team snaps at practice on Monday.
This comes after Mateer threw for just 44 yards through the first three quarters of Oklahoma's loss to South Carolina and the firing of his offensive coordinator.
However, maybe a new voice can bring the best out of Oklahoma's starting quarterback.
This season, Mateer is sixth in the SEC with 1,835 passing yards. He has 13 touchdown passes and seven interceptions.
Can Witten and the offensive coaching staff unlock something in Mateer that Arbuckle was unable to over the final four games of the season?
