The Oklahoma Sooners made a move on the offensive side of the ball on Monday, removing offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle from his post and promoting tight ends coach Jason Witten to interim offensive coordinator for the rest of the season.
In the last three seasons, the Sooners have had four different voices calling the plays. In 2024, injuries took the legs out of Oklahoma's offense, and Seth Littrell got the axe. In 2026, quarterback John Mateer regressed, and Arbuckle's unwillingness to take pressure off him with a more balanced attack sank the offense.
Saturday was arguably the worst performance of the Arbuckle era. The Sooners had just 111 yards of offense in the first half, and Mateer was struggling to push the ball down the field. It wasn't
until garbage time in the fourth quarter that the Sooners were able to find some offensive success against South Carolina's backups.
At 4-4 on the season, Oklahoma ranks No. 109 in the nation in scoring and No. 111 in total yards. It's a far cry from what we've come to expect from the Sooners offense.
With Arbuckle out, the Sooners turn to Witten to provide a spark for an offense that brought back a lot of talent from the College Football Playoff team in 2025. Can the new voice bring a new attitude, energy, and level of execution to the Sooners' offense? Only time will tell.
Here's how social media reacted to the changes.
