One of the biggest changes to the Oklahoma Sooners this offseason is the playmakers around quarterback John Mateer. The Sooners added Virginia Cavalier wide receiver Trell Harris and Texas Longhorn wide receiver Parker Livingstone.
But the Sooners don't want to have to go to the transfer portal every year to find key playmakers. They want to find them in the high school ranks and develop them. Wide receiver coach Emmett Jones and Jim Nagy may have found the next star in the high school ranks. Wide receiver Dedrick Kimbrough is a four-star in the 2028 recruiting class.
The Alabama native has some big-time offers, including from his home-state school, the Alabama Crimson Tide. Rivals recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong feels it's Oklahoma that is the favorite
to land him.
"Emmett Jones, Oklahoma's position coach, has done a fantastic job leading the charge and recruiting Dedrick Kimbrough," Wiltfong said via the "Wiltfong Whiparound for Rivals on YouTube. "Notre Dame, Florida and Miami are a few others he's high on, but it is Oklahoma setting the pace... I've logged the prediction in favor of OU."
Oklahoma's interest in Kimbrough also highlights the work Jones has done since taking over the wide receiver room. The Sooners have emphasized adding explosive playmakers around Mateer, but developing their own talent is just as important for the long-term health of the roster.
Wiltfong's prediction gives Oklahoma an early advantage, but there is still plenty of time left in Kimbrough's recruitment. If the Sooners can maintain their momentum and ultimately land the Alabama standout, it would be another major recruiting win for Jones, Nagy and Brent Venables as Oklahoma builds its 2028 class.
