The Oklahoma Sooners are still making headway on the recruiting trail. It has been a goal since Brent Venables and his staff took over in 2021 to keep the best players from the Sooner State from leaving. This cycle, that includes the state’s No. 1 athlete in the 2028 class, Kamieon Compton-Nero of Owasso High School.
Oklahoma received promising news as Compton-Nero released his top five schools on Monday. His top five schools are Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ole Miss, Alabama, and SMU.
Compton-Nero has visited Oklahoma multiple times. His latest visit was during the Sooners’ season-opening 51-0 victory over UTEP. There, he said that the Sooner staff and management made him feel welcome during his visit. He shared a video of him walking across the field
with OU General Manager Jim Nagy as the Sooners warmed up. It also included a picture of him with head coach Brent Venables and safeties coach Brandon Hall.

Compton-Nero is a 6-foot-3, 187-pound athlete who can play multiple positions at a high level. The Sooners are recruiting him as a safety, which is one of his main positions at Owasso High School, where he also plays wide receiver. Just last year, however, he played safety and quarterback for Rejoice Christian, where he led the team to a Class A-I state championship alongside now-OU freshman wide receiver Xavier Okwufulueze. After Compton-Nero’s move to Owasso in the offseason, he’s been fine-tuning his skills at safety.
Compton-Nero is a consensus top-100 prospect in the nation, coming in at No. 53 per 247Sports, No. 97 per Rivals, and No. 36 per ESPN. As a four-star recruit out of Owasso (OK) High School, he holds 20 Power Four offers, including 11 from SEC and Big Ten schools.
Many of the top recruiting experts, including On3’s Steve Wiltfong, Sam Spiegelman, and Josh McCuistion, have all already predicted Compton-Nero to land with the Sooners when he ultimately makes his decision.
