The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off a sloppy 14-6 win over the New Mexico Lobos last week, moving to 2-1. The Sooners now take on the No. 2 Georgia Bulldogs on the road on Saturday.
The Bulldogs are an incredible 58-5 at home under Kirby Smart. Under Smart, Georgia has one of the best defenses in college football each year. But this year, the team also has one of the best quarterbacks. Gunner Stockton is having a great season, completing 84.4% of his passes for 583 yards and nine scores with no interceptions.
Head coach Brent Venables praised Stockton and said the Sooners face a difficult challenge.
"They do a really good job," Venables said. "The quarterback knows when to put it in different spots and when he's got the matchups that they like.
He does a great job from an accuracy standpoint of taking the ball in their RPO world and putting it on the right shoulder with the right leverage. They do a good job physically of making plays... It's going to be a great, great challenge as a football team."
For Oklahoma, its offensive struggles put enormous pressure on its defense to maintain the standard it has established early in the season. The Sooners have been strong defensively, but Georgia's combination of quarterback efficiency, physicality, and explosiveness will push that unit in ways New Mexico could not.
Venables knows exactly what awaits him in Athens. Now Oklahoma has to prove it can handle a quarterback who has made very few mistakes and a Georgia team that rarely loses on its home field.
