The Oklahoma Soonersare heading to take on the No. 24 Florida Gators in "The Swamp" on Saturday. The Sooners and Gators have very little history against each other, meeting only twice, both times in the postseason.
They first met in the BCS National Championship Game in the 2008 season. The Sooners headed into that game with the hottest offense in college football, setting a record with five straight 60-point games. Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford had just won the Heisman Trophy, but an elite Florida defense stifled the Sooners' offense. Oklahoma fell 24-14 to the Tim Tebow-led Gators.
The other time both schools met was in the Cotton Bowl in 2020. This was a COVID-shortened year, but Oklahoma entered the game red hot. The Sooners started the year 1-2,
but rattled off seven straight wins, including a Big 12 championship. They faced a Kyle Trask-led Florida team coming off a loss in the SEC Championship Game. Oklahoma turned Trask over three times and ran for an incredible 435 yards, with Rhamondre Stevenson leading the way with 186 yards. Oklahoma won 55-20.
With the all-time series tied at one win apiece, Saturday's matchup gives Oklahoma and Florida a chance to add another chapter to a relatively short history. This time, the setting shifts to Gainesville, where the Sooners will face the challenge of playing in one of college football's most recognizable road environments.
Oklahoma hopes to respond after a disastrous performance against the South Carolina Gamecocks, while Florida hopes to recapture its early-season magic. After two memorable postseason matchups, the programs will meet for the first time in the regular season, adding a new dimension to their brief history.
