The Oklahoma Soonersoffense struggled again on Saturday against the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Sooners were blown out at home 42-25.
Oklahoma's offense managed just three points in the first three quarters. John Mateer completed 26-of-43 passes for 244 yards and two scores, both in the fourth quarter when the game was decided. Oklahoma also managed only 115 yards on 3.7 yards per carry on the ground. Tory Blaylock led the Sooners with just 32 yards.
Oklahoma has had a major offensive problem for three seasons now. The Sooners are again among the worst units in the sport. They struggle to move the ball, and against South Carolina, they also struggled with penalties. The Sooners finished with nine penalties in the game.
Head coach Brent Venables
said the team lacked rhythm and couldn't overcome its ineptitude at times.
"We couldn't get any offensive rhythm in the first half," Venables said. "We're not built to overcome some of the ineptness as a football team that we displayed out there."
Venables' comments highlight how much work remains for Oklahoma's offense. The Sooners have struggled to stay consistent throughout the season, and their lack of production against South Carolina showed how hard it has become to recover when things go wrong early. Penalties, an ineffective rushing attack, and stalled drives have repeatedly put the offense behind the chains and made it harder to find any momentum.
The coaching staff now faces the challenge of identifying solutions before the struggles become even more costly. Oklahoma needs better execution across the offensive line, more production from its playmakers and greater consistency from Mateer. With expectations still high in Norman, the Sooners must show they can fix these issues rather than repeat the same mistakes each week.
