The Oklahoma Sooners are in the midst of fall camp as they prepare for the start of the 2026 college football season. The Sooners enter the year with a ton of momentum after making the College Football Playoff last season for the first time under head coach Brent Venables.
Oklahoma also has momentum due to returning several key contributors from last year's team, like quarterback John Mateer, wide receiver Isaiah Sategna, and defensive standouts in defensive tackle David Stone, EDGE Taylor Wein, linebacker Kip Lewis and defensive backs Peyton and Eli Bowen.
As the season approaches, On3's Chris Low has put out his preseason All-America teams. Ironically, no Sooner made his first team despite having the reigning Lou Groza Award winner, Tate Sandell
and one of the best defenses in college football. Low had Sandell on the second team and had Stone and Lewis on the third team. No other Sooner made the list.
Three preseason All-Americans is certainly a positive for Oklahoma, but the lack of a first-team selection stands out. The Sooners have several players with the potential to earn more national recognition as the season progresses. Mateer, Wein, Sategna and the Bowen brothers are among the returning contributors who could make their mark in 2026.
More importantly, Oklahoma has bigger goals than preseason awards. The Sooners want to prove last year's College Football Playoff appearance was the beginning of something bigger. If the defense remains elite and the offense takes a significant step forward, Oklahoma could have several more players in the All-America conversations by the end of the season.
For now, three Sooners have earned preseason recognition. The goal is to have even more when the season is over.
