The Oklahoma Sooners have continued a troubling trend this season, where their offense has continued to struggle. For the third season in a row, their third in the SEC, the Sooners' offense can't move the football with much consistency. And even when they do, they turn it over, as they did against Georgia on Saturday in Athens.
Brent Venables is a defensive guy. But as the head coach, he bears some responsibility for the production of his offense. He's the one who hired Jeff Lebby, Seth Littrell, and Ben Arbuckle, and it's been mostly bad since Lebby left. Despite some of the offensive struggles last season, the Sooners found ways to put points on the board. This season, that hasn't been the case.
After falling 2-2 with a blowout loss to Georgia,
the offense could put Venables on the hot seat. USA TODAY Sports college football writer John Brice said Venables's seat is getting warm after another offensive letdown.
"Oklahoma made a hasty decision when it rewarded Brent Venables with an extension after the 2025 season," Brice wrote. "... The return on that investment has been a full-blown dumpster fire."
Brice continued, "Oklahoma cannot score — maybe Sooners offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle is destined for this list — and is keeping its defense on the field way too much."
Brent Venables has done a great job rebuilding Oklahoma's defense during his four-plus seasons in Norman. But it's going to take finding some consistency on the offensive side of the ball to put Oklahoma back into contender status. Can they do that over the course of the next couple of weeks as they prepare for the No. 1 Texas Longhorns?
Only time will tell.
