The Oklahoma Sooners had some bright spots on offense against the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday; however, it ended in disaster. The Sooners fell 21-13 after dominating the Wildcats for three quarters.
Oklahoma totaled 346 yards of offense. They also punted only once in the first three quarters. Quarterback John Mateer completed 24-of-40 for 270 yards and one touchdown. However, in the fourth quarter, he threw three costly interceptions, one of which was taken back for a touchdown. Those plays ripped the heart out of the Sooners, who looked like they were on their way to another major win.
Wide receiver Manny Choice said they have plenty of areas to improve, but he believes they have the right players to do it.
"There's place that we need to be
better and we will be better," Choice said via SoonerScoop. "So, just coming together as a team and working on those negatives."
For Oklahoma, the priority now is learning from the mistakes without losing confidence in what the offense showed during the first three quarters. The Sooners moved the ball effectively against a ranked opponent, but the fourth-quarter turnovers proved too costly to overcome. Improving decision-making under pressure, protecting possessions and finishing drives will be critical as the offense works to turn promising stretches into complete performances.
Choice's confidence in the group will be tested as Oklahoma prepares for its road matchup with the Mississippi State Bulldogs. The Sooners have shown they can generate offense, but they need to put that production together with cleaner execution when the game is on the line. Coming together as a unit and correcting the recurring issues could help Oklahoma respond to the Kentucky loss and take a step toward the consistency it has lacked this season.
