The Oklahoma Sooners might have just suffered the most embarrassing loss in the Brent Venables era on Saturday. The Sooners were dominated in all phases against the South Carolina Gamecocks in Norman.
Oklahoma fell 42-25 but trailed 35-10 through three quarters. The Sooners have suffered several tough losses this season, sitting at 4-4, but have always been able to fall back on an elite defense. However, they can no longer do that after the defense gave up 521 yards of total offense, the most since joining the SEC.
South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers had his way. He completed 19-of-24 passes for 301 yards and three touchdowns, while running for 96 yards and two scores on just 13 carries. The Sooners' offense was also dominated. They finished
with 359 yards, but 256 of that came in the fourth quarter, when South Carolina had benched its starters and played conservatively.
Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables was blunt with his assessment of the game.
"I'm not going to say a whole lot other than the obvious," Venables said. "I'm not going to try to sit here and explain or excuse or anything else. We got our (expletive) whooped (Saturday) in every way. I'm really disappointed."
Venables' blunt assessment reflects the magnitude of the setback, but the bigger question is how Oklahoma responds. The Sooners have now lost their defensive identity, struggled to find answers offensively and fallen to .500 after eight games. With both sides of the ball failing to deliver, the coaching staff has plenty to address before the team takes the field again.
For Venables, the coming weeks could be pivotal in determining the program's direction. Oklahoma needs to rediscover the defensive toughness that carried it through difficult stretches and find a way to make the offense more productive. The Sooners still have games left to change their season's narrative, but Saturday's performance has made it clear they need significant improvement across the board.
