The Oklahoma Sooners had another abysmal performance on Saturday. The Sooners lost 42-25 at home to the South Carolina Gamecocks, marking their second straight home loss.
Oklahoma was dominated on both sides of the ball. South Carolina gained 521 yards against the vaunted Sooner defense. That's the most yards Oklahoma has allowed since joining the SEC. The Gamecocks also shut down Oklahoma's offense. The Sooner offense managed just three points through three quarters, before finding success against South Carolina's backups and a conservative game plan.
The last time Oklahoma played South Carolina in Norman, the Gamecocks defeated the Sooners 35-9 and it resulted in the firing of offensive coordinator Seth Littrell. This embarrassing performance
has many wondering if more staff changes are on the way. However, head coach Brent Venables shot down any talks of that happening.
"I'm not talking about anything like that," Venables said.
Venables' decision to shut down questions about potential staff changes does little to quiet the concerns surrounding Oklahoma's direction. Allowing 521 yards and struggling to generate offense for three quarters have raised serious questions about the team's preparation, adjustments and overall execution. With the Sooners now carrying back-to-back home losses, pressure on the coaching staff will only increase.
The focus now shifts to how Venables responds and whether Oklahoma can show meaningful improvement in the weeks ahead. The Sooners will have an opportunity to change the narrative, but that will require progress on both sides of the ball. For a program with championship expectations, another performance like Saturday's will only intensify scrutiny of the coaching staff.
