The Oklahoma Sooners enter this week with the No. 1 Texas Longhorns waiting on Saturday. The Sooners enter the game at 2-2 and unranked after starting the season in the top 10.
The offense has been the Sooners' biggest struggle. Oklahoma is near the bottom in the country in total offense, passing offense, rushing offense and scoring offense. The Sooners have also been hit with the turnover bug, turning it over in every game this season.
Head coach Brent Venables was asked about the offense in his game week press conference. He said that the offense needs to start applying pressure to other teams.
"We've been under a lot of pressure," Venables said. "We need to apply the pressure and get back to what I know that we are capable of, offensively speaking.
Everybody took the opportunity to improve and get better. Gain some confidence through the work. Again, every week is a season of its own."
Venables' comments show that Oklahoma understands the offense has to be better, but the bye week gave the Sooners valuable time to work through those issues and rebuild confidence. The challenge now is turning that work into production against one of the best teams in the country.
A strong offensive performance against Texas could quickly change the conversation surrounding the Sooners. If Oklahoma can protect the football, create more pressure of its own and play with the confidence Venables is looking for, the Red River Rivalry could become the starting point for a much-needed turnaround.
