The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off an embarrassing 41-13 road loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. The Sooners turned the ball over four times, three of them by quarterback John Mateer.
Mateer finished the game completing 25-of-34 passes for 231 yards, two touchdowns and those three turnovers. The Sooners also didn't get anything out of their rushing attack, rushing for just 65 yards on 35 carries.
This performance has resulted in a lot of public criticism. That includes SEC Network's Paul Finebaum, who compared the Sooners to an Arkansas Razorbacks team considered the worst in the SEC.
"Watching those games back-to-back, Georgia at Arkansas and Georgia at Oklahoma, Matt, tell me if you could tell the difference between Arkansas and Oklahoma," Finebaum
said on 'The Matt Barrie Show.' "They both were inept."
Georgia also dismantled the Razorbacks earlier this season. They lost 45-17 in that game, and have just four wins in the last two seasons combined.
Finebaum's comparison reflects just how poor Oklahoma looked in Athens, but the Sooners still have time to change that perception. The bye week gives Brent Venables and his staff an opportunity to address the offensive issues, while the Red River Rivalry against the Texas Longhorns provides an immediate stage for Oklahoma to show that the Georgia performance was not representative of this team.
The Sooners don't need to erase the loss, but they do need to respond to it. A stronger performance against Texas would give Oklahoma a chance to turn the page and begin rebuilding the confidence that surrounded the program entering the season.
