Oklahoma Sooners head coach has reportedly made a major decision regarding the offensive coaching staff. Reports say that the Sooners have fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle after two seasons in Norman.
Arbuckle was hired to turn around a struggling offense. In 2025, the offense improved from 2024, but it was still among the worst units in the SEC. In 2026, the offense plummeted to near the bottom of the country in several offensive categories. That led to Arbuckle's firing on Monday.
As offensive coordinator, he also ran the quarterback room. Arbuckle had two quarterbacks committed in future classes: 2027 commit Jamison Roberts, and 2028 commit Trey Tagliaferri. Both quarterbacks are four-star commits.
Tagliaferri reacted to the news of
Arbuckle's departure by saying he is still all in on the Sooners.
“It doesn’t change anything," Tagliaferri told SoonerScoop's Parker Thune. "Still love OU and all of the coaches and people.”
Tagliaferri's response provides an encouraging sign for Oklahoma as the program navigates another significant coaching change. Coaching turnover can create uncertainty for highly recruited quarterbacks, particularly when the coach who helped build the relationship is no longer on staff. His public commitment suggests the Sooners have not lost his support, at least for now.
Oklahoma will need to work quickly to maintain that momentum with both Roberts and Tagliaferri. The next offensive coordinator will have an important role in building relationships with the future quarterbacks and establishing a clear vision for the offense. With two four-star prospects already committed, keeping the 2027 and 2028 recruiting classes intact will be another priority as the Sooners look to move past Arbuckle's departure.
