The Oklahoma Sooners fell to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in SEC play in 2026, losing to the Kentucky Wildcats at home in Norman on Saturday night, 21-13. It was a disappointing loss, especially considering all of the momentum OU had built after its thrilling win over Texas the week prior. Instead of building on that success, the Sooners took a step back, becoming a .500 team yet again.
After the game, head coach Brent Venables discussed his team's inability to land the knockout punch against the Wildcats. OU controlled much of the game, but when it came time to win, the Sooners couldn't find enough plays in the fourth quarter.
"The margins are really small," Venables said. "They made the plays when they needed to, and we weren't able to get it done as
a staff, or as a team, but we had plenty of opportunity there late in the third quarter to knock them out, we just weren't able to get it done. We couldn't get the stop when we needed to, we couldn't make the conversion when we needed to."
It's interesting that Venables started by talking about how Kentucky has been winning on the margins, because that's the exact problem he is facing right now. Despite typically good defense and sound special teams, OU's margins are incredibly small because the offense is so poor. The Sooners gave up two good drives and 14 points as a defense, but when the offense gives the opponent seven points and can only muster 13 points of their own, that's a recipe for a loss. Oklahoma's margins are too small, and the defense has to either play perfect or score on their own for the Sooners to be able to win. In the SEC jungle, that isn't going to work.
In the latest deflating loss under Venables' watch, it was painfully obvious what OU's problems are. It's beginning to look like those problems aren't fixable this season. Otherwise, he's in for many more postgame press conferences where he regrets that his Sooners didn't have enough to get the job done.
