The Oklahoma Sooners are coming off a dominating loss to the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. The Sooners fell 41-13 to the two-time defending SEC champions.
The Sooners struggled offensively, totaling just 296 yards of total offense, including 65 yards on the ground. Oklahoma also turned it over four times, with quarterback John Mateer having three of those turnovers.
The defense played fairly well, given the circumstances. They held a high-powered Georgia offense to just 306 total yards. They also held quarterback Gunner Stockton to just 171 yards on 14-of-25 passing.
During the game, teammates appeared frustrated on the sidelines. Head coach Brent Venables was asked about this, and he admitted that his players are upset.
"People are pissed," Venables
said. You know, you got to be able to have honest conversations within your family. That's that's what a normal family should do. That's what I would be disappointed if they weren't, you know... I'd be concerned if there weren't some guys who were pissed. But I do believe in character. I do believe in that. I know we have incredibly strong character guys who are alphas. Guys who are incredibly invested."
Venables also emphasized the character in his locker room and said he believes Oklahoma has players invested enough to be genuinely hurt by what happened in Athens.
"They should be hurt, and they should be pissed," Venables said.
That distinction matters. Venables isn't suggesting the frustration will disappear overnight. Instead, he seems to believe the players' anger can fuel fixing what went wrong.
The Georgia loss was a major setback, but Venables' message is clear: being angry about it isn't the problem. For Oklahoma, how they respond to that anger will determine whether the loss becomes a turning point or simply the start of a lost season.
