The Oklahoma Sooners have a major test on Saturday against the No. 1 Texas Longhorns in the Red River Rivalry. The Longhorns have owned the matchup since Brent Venables took over.
The Longhorns have won three of the last four rivalry games against the Sooners. That includes last season's 23-6 win. Oklahoma was held to 258 total yards in that game. However, the biggest difference was three turnovers by quarterback John Mateer, who was coming off thumb surgery.
Now, the Sooners look to avenge last season's loss. One player who was on the sidelines last year but didn't play is offensive lineman Ryan Fodje. He said he was chomping at the bit to get on the field and can't wait for Saturday.
"I was on the sideline, on the bench watching them play, and
like my foot, it just couldn't stop," Fodje said via SoonerScoop. "I want to go out there and kill somebody. That's what I want to do. That's what I'm here to do this weekend."
Fodje's eagerness reflects the urgency Oklahoma needs heading into one of its biggest games of the season. The Sooners have struggled to find consistency early in 2026, but the Red River Rivalry offers a chance to reset the narrative against their biggest rival. Winning in the trenches will be especially important as Oklahoma looks to establish its rushing attack and give Mateer a cleaner pocket to operate from.
If the Sooners can bring that same intensity to the field and execute for four quarters, they have an opportunity to make this rivalry game far more competitive than last year's meeting. A win over Texas would not only deliver a statement win but also give Oklahoma a major confidence boost as it looks to turn its season around.
