The once-promising 2026 college football season for the Oklahoma Sooners seems to be slipping away after their loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. The Sooners entered the season with plenty of momentum after making the College Football Playoff in 2025 and returning several key contributors from that team.
However, after four games, Oklahoma sits at 2-2 and is coming off a humiliating 41-13 road loss to the Georgia Bulldogs. The Sooners were never really competitive, trailing 28-0 at halftime. When a team has high hopes like the Sooners have, and have struggles early in a season, it's natural for frustration to set in.
Head coach Brent Venables was asked about that frustration and whether he's worried it could divide the locker room. Venables said he doesn't
feel the Sooners' locker room is headed that way.
"I would be disappointed and shocked if it did [lead to divisiveness]," Venables said. "And I've been in a locker room, you know, for over three decades and know what, you know, what a winning, you know, strong leadership, strong character group of guys looks like. And we have that."
That confidence is notable considering how difficult Saturday's game became. Oklahoma's offense struggled with turnovers, while the defense eventually wore down as Georgia built its sizable lead.
The Georgia loss exposed plenty of problems Oklahoma needs to address, particularly on offense. Quarterback John Mateer turned the ball over three times in the second quarter alone, and Venables acknowledged after the game that the difficult start had affected the quarterback's confidence.
But Venables' comments suggest he doesn't believe those struggles changed the team's character. That's important because Oklahoma's season isn't defined by one afternoon in Athens, even if the loss made the Sooners' problems impossible to ignore.
