The Carolina Panthers deserve credit for their late addition of tight end Darren Waller. With the offense missing some real production out of the spot for quite some time, the former Pro Bowler may be able to provide a bit of much-needed help.
But Waller, who turns 34 years old on Sunday, is likely just a temporary fix—if that. So the tight end position may be high up on Carolina's priority list for next season, and perhaps the 2027 draft may have a solution.
According to a new mock from Ryan Wilson at CBS Sports, the Panthers will use their first-round pick (No. 9 overall) on LSU tight end Trey'Dez Green. Wilson writes:
Tommy Tremble is in the final year of his current deal, and if Bryce Young is the long-term answer, they'll need to continue
to surround him with playmakers.
You'll hear no argument from us if tight end is the first pick, even if it's not considered a premium position in the modern NFL. The point is to surround quarterback Bryce Young with as many playmakers as possible, regardless of what position they happen to play.
Green (6-foot-7, 242 pounds) has the requisite size and athleticism to be a potent weapon at the next level in the red zone, where the Panthers ranked 14th last season. Last year, Green racked up 33 catches, 433 yards and seven touchdowns for the Tigers.
