This weekend, the Carolina Panthers parted ways with nearly 40 players—getting their 91-man roster down to 53 for the start of the 2026 campaign. But the work to their locker room won't be stopping there.
Starting at noon today, NFL teams can start building their initial practice squads. Practice squads serve a number of purposes—mainly as a reserve of extra or emergency depth and as a means to keeping and developing younger talent.
Teams can sign up to 16 players to their practice squad, or 17 if they choose to participate in the league's International Player Pathway Program. The group can be comprised of players they have released or waived in the past few days as well as players other teams have released or waived.
