If the Carolina Panthers are going to make some notable additions to their roster within the next handful of weeks, they'll have to find the right deal at the right time.
That has and continues to be the modus operandi for the team's braintrust, as reinforced by head coach Dave Canales on Tuesday. Canales—with the Panthers still atop the NFC South, but dealing with a pretty long list of injuries—was asked how often he speaks to general manager Dan Morgan about making moves ahead of this year's trade deadline.
"All the time," he replied. "I won't get into specific positions or anything like that. But Dan has done a great job of trying to look for opportunities that may present themselves to us, to be able to challenge our roster in the right way.
So we're always open, we're always looking.
"I'll pop into his office right after this meeting for about 15 or 20 minutes and we may be watching, 'Hey, let's take a look at this guy.' We may be watching a college player as he's starting to gather his evaluations. But always having those conversations to be ready for what could be."
Perhaps the greatest area of need sits in the secondary, at the cornerback position. Starters Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson are both on injured reserve, and are not expected to return anytime soon.
Although Carolina came away with an impressive win, the absences of Horn and Jackson were rather apparent in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions. Special teams ace Akayleb Evans had a rough go as one of the two replacements, allowing nearly 200 yards and a touchdown over 11 receptions.
Morgan and Canales, along with the cornerback spot, may also want to try to add competition at wide receiver, center and the defensive front seven.
This year's deadline is set for 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Nov. 10.
