Going into Week 4, Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young leads the NFL in passing yards. However, he's also coming off his worst game of the campaign thus far—totaling 291 yards, but just one touchdown in a 21-18 loss to the Cleveland Browns.
The team's supporting cast didn't do Young any favors, though. His pass protection was as bad as any team's in any game this season, his best receiver got shut down by an elite cornerback, his second-best wide receiver had to leave early with a quad injury and his (officially) third-best was on the sidelines with an injury.
Some folks apparently think Young deserved to drop in their quarterback rankings, as they did at NFL.com—where Young tumbled from No. 9 to No. 21. But over at CBS Sports, they were
much more understanding of the situation—knocking Young down just one spot to No. 12.
Garrett Podell writes:
Bryce Young is in a tough spot with the Carolina Panthers. His offensive line is allowing a quarterback pressure rate of 47.7%, the highest in the NFL, and two of his top three receivers, Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette are banged up. That has turned him into an inefficient chucker (59.5% completion percentage, 26th out of 32 qualified quarterbacks) with the most passing yards in the NFL (939).
Considering the pass blocking he's had to work with, Young has done an exceptional job this season of managing pressure and attacking the defense downfield.
Next up, Young faces a Detroit Lions defense that should be much easier than the Browns one he just faced. The Lions have allowed the most passing yards per game (299.3) and are giving up the most fantasy points per game (30.7) to opposing quarterbacks.
