On Monday, hundreds of NFL players will hit the open market—and smart teams will take advantage by trying to plug what roster holes they have left ahead of the start of the regular season.
The Carolina Panthers
appear to be one of them, and should be ready to pounce on a playmaker where they need it most. At the moment, that's the linebacker position, which ESPN named their biggest roster need earlier this week.Josh Edwards at CBS Sports agrees, and says linebacker is the one position the Panthers should be targeting on the waiver wire after roster cuts. He writes:

Kuwatch should provide assistance on special teams, but the team may want to go in another direction.
The best direction is to sign six-time first-team All-Pro Bobby Wagner, who's still a free agent. While he'd be entering his 15th NFL campaign at 36 years old, Wagner showed he still has a little something left in the tank last season in Washington.
It's unlikely a better linebacker will hit the waiver wire or become a free agent in the coming days, but the Panthers can probably afford to wait and see what their best options are going into next week. Either way, it would be a mistake to roll into Week 1 with Trevin Wallace or Claudin Cherelus starting at the linebacker spot opposite Pro Bowler Devin Lloyd.
