And here we were thinking that long snapper JJ Jansen's history-making mark of games played would be the major record for the Carolina Panthers here in Week 6.
Between a slow start for their offense as well as the coaching staff, the Panthers put on a pretty unsavory performance on Sunday—even in what was a 25-14 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. But the ugly victory will always be remembered for its dirty laundry—as Carolina was flagged for a franchise-record 149 penalty yards.
Head coach Dave Canales talked about the messiness at the beginning of his post-game press conference, calling the awful output "outrageous."
"We have to clean that up," Canales stated. "We gotta do better with our hands, in different situations—particularly, if you're
not at the point of attack for a play. We gotta be smarter, we gotta be cleaner with our screens, o-linemen down the field, all that.
"So, a lot to work on, a lot to fix, a lot to talk about tomorrow. But right now, it's about celebrating the fight and the guys being able to finish and find a way to win."
That fight saw the Panthers post 399 yards of total offense, with quarterback Bryce Young grinding his way to 281 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. Running back Chuba Hubbard served as the engine for the unit, rushing for 120 yards and a touchdown on 28 carries.
Carolina's defense also stuck in, holding a banged-up Philadelphia offense to just 222 yards and six conversions on 15 third-down attempts.
All of that effort overcame a total of 13 penalties on the afternoon, a number Canales was asked about off the opening statement of his chat with reporters.
"I didn't have much of a problem with the calls," he replied. "And got explanations from the officials of what was happening, and also why it was being so lopsided. I thought there were some things that I was trying to point out on the other side.
"But, at the end of the day, the hands gotta be cleaner. We can't be down the field on screens. Those are obvious ones. Coming off a bye, that's not the type of ball we wanted to be able to get back to playing clean football. So we'll work on that."
Hopefully for the Panthers, that work shows up in Week 7—when they host the 1-5 Tampa Bay Buccaneers at home.
