The Carolina Panthers got into a shootout on Sunday afternoon with the Chicago Bears.
In the first half, they played them pretty much even—but eventually, fell behind and wound up losing 59-37. Those 59 points were the most ever allowed by Carolina, and now stands as the fourth-highest total in Chicago's long history.
While the defense was definitely a bummer, there was a lot to like this week on the other side of the ball. Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik looks like he might be a big upgrade over head coach Dave Canales as a play-caller, running back Chuba Hubbard was as explosive as we've seen him in two years and wide receiver Jalen Coker looks like he's turning into a star.
Best of all, quarterback Bryce Young had one of the most productive
games of his career and his first strong season opener since he was drafted. Young dropped 361 passing yards, his second-highest mark, and four total touchdowns on the Bears.
Here's where Young ranks in some key quarterback stats after Week 1:
- Completion rate: 62.2 percent (21st)
- Passing yards: 361 (third)
- First downs: 17 (second)
- Yards per attempt: 9.8 (fourth)
- Passing touchdowns: 3 (tied for second)
- 20+ yard passes: 5 (tied for third)
- Passer rating: 110.3 (ninth)
- EPA/play: 0.340 (eighth)
- Success rate: 50 percent (12th)
- CPOE: 6.6 percent (ninth)
- Air yards: 10.1 (10th)
Young also threw one interception, but that was more a great play by cornerback Malik Muhammad than it was an error on his part.
Next up, Young and the Panthers will visit the Atlanta Falcons—who he's had more success against than any other opponent.
